Out of my comfort zone - Orion (coloured) by queenofeagles
The art nouveau patterns are gorgeous and the amount of symbolism she managed to squeeze in makes it even better.

Description

This. Took. Ages. And I still blame Vixenkiba for it :P

Not just because of lineart I normally don't draw, but because I thought it was a good idea to paint each line in a different colour. Now it looks like Orion's cloak is lined with strips of holographic foil, which is pretty neat, but man, I hadn't realised how many lines were there... I had to though, there would have been 50 shades of black otherwise. Quite boring to look at. That's also why the guy has a purple cloak instead of black, just because to add a bit of colour to this thing. Too bad the thumb version of this thing doesn't show all those individual, coloured lines though.

Here is the lineart version of this thing:

Maybe, one day, when I feel terribly bored, I'll draw my other characters like this as well and have a complete set. That's not going to happen anytime soon. Art nouveau is fun, but I miss my rough brush strokes!

Maybe you've read this already in the description of the lineart version, but have some hidden and not-so-hidden symbols:

- Constellation of Orion: self-explanatory, though I might have altered it here and there to make it match the symmetry of the crown. now it looks like the top stars are jewels.

- Arrows in the corners: Orion is a hunter (not focused on animals though), it had to show somehow.

- The crowned moon: Emblem of the Holy Army, Orion's employer - not that Orion likes them a lot...

- Curly smoky stuff: Because every self-respecting sorcerer of darkness should have it. And I needed something art nouveau that didn't look too feminine. flowing art nouveau clothes look girly easily because the fabric looks like chiffon or silk. Art nouveau is such a feminine style, and I picked a rather manly man to draw... He really looked like a woman at some point.

- Simplified astrolabes: The what now? These are the spiderwebs inside the moon. The crown and corners have them as well but they have been altered too much by me to represent anything. Astrolabes are clever devices that show the night sky at certain moments in time or calculate something related to stargazing, depending on the model. Orion has one built into his pocket watch to calculate the rise and set of Rigel, one of the bright stars in the constellation of Orion.

EDIT: The pic looks a bit like it's low quality here on DA, but that's actually caused by a 'gritty' overlay layer I added to make this thing look like it has been printed on paper. I don't like the 'cleanness' that usually goes with digital art, especially with lineart, you see. Too bad it doesn't show well on small versions and bad screens. Make sure to zoom in ;)

EDIT 2: My goodness, this thing got a DD! I'm soooo happy right now :D:D:D Thanks!

Excellent artwork. Love those swirling design frames too!
