... Because no story is complete with some dark guy coming to the rescue.

I have to admit that I left an important detail out here, a detail that does cause a bit of a problem in the main story; the library is a mess. Not just chaotic mess, with books missing or placed on the wrong shelf, but 'someone tried to destroy the place' kind of mess. This place used to be some sort of university - smaller than our universities though, but it was a place of knowledge and it had students, so I think it counts as one. That was the case many decades ago, and now the castle has become the house of a wealthy nobleman. He doesn't like the fact that he is living on a big pile of knowledge about magic, so he tried to get rid of it. The library is protected by magic though - the place will not burn down very easily because of it. That doesn't mean that the things in it can't be mistreated at all. A lot of stuff got damaged there, including the ladders. That's the reason why some of them are broken or missing. But yeah, this is a bit of a long story to explain in a short comic, so I left it out.

And those annoying perspectives again :S
